Dr. Rozakis received his MD degree from Cornell Medical College in 1982 and did his residency at the Duke Eye Center. His time at Duke was notable for envisioning the world of laser refractive surgery. He graduated in 1987. Soon after entering private practice, Dr. Rozakis became involved in the first United States clinical trials involving PRK, a procedure involving the application of the excimer laser to the corneal surface. In 1992 he discovered the work of Luis Ruiz MD and Guillermo Avalos MD, both pioneers in a new procedure which was destined to become Lasik. Dr. Rozakis coauthored a book which taught the art of making what is today the Lasik flap. In 1994 he was one of the first in the world to do Lasik and introduced Lasik to the United States in Tampa Florida. He developed a method to treat irregular astigmatism. 1994 to 1998 were the busy years. In 1998 he won an award from an international society.

Learn More Seeing that Lasik was NOT the answer for the very nearsighted, Dr. Rozakis began an adventure that continues to this day, namely the development of new thin implantable lenses. He implanted the first such lens, or Phakic lenses in North America. Innovator. In 2005 his curiosity led him to explore a new form of medicine involving the restoration of physiology back to an optimized and youthful state. He provides this to his Lasik patients. This work led him back to the eye in the form of an Original hypothesis on a potentially new form of treatment for macular degeneration.
